What's all this then?

A potpourri of various things that pop into my mind at nonlinear points in time.

Welcome to the stage Reggie Watts! To call him just a comedian would be disrespectful to his unique multi-talented nature. Reggie Watts much like The Umbilical Brothers in the previous post combines many different mediums and senses to create what i call a “comedic experience”. It’s hard even to state in a fluid manner what he actually does. Firstly Watts is a long trained vocal Jazz musician who knows his way around a loop machine or non-linear loop based technology as Watts likes to call it. Watts then uses his skills of looping and music to create live improvised songs. This is just the beginning. When Watts is not doing music in his act he is using his immense imitation skills to create creative characters that he switches through quickly, leaving you wondering which character is actually him. You’ll also rarely find a traditional or repeated joke in Watts oeuvre because everything he does is stream of consciousness. He is making up jokes and music left and right in a highly intellectual manner. He is truly the new pioneer of artistic comedy. Oh and did i mention he’s fluent in three languages?

This pushing away from the somewhat archaic comedy concepts of the 20th century is something that excites me very much. Soon there will be no more “A cat walks into a bar” jokes or anything of that nature. A new revolution is on its way in the world of comedy and Reggie Watts is leading the charge.

If you want to see more of the genius of Reggie Watts check out this amazing set he did at “AtGoogleTalks”. It’s 40 minutes of Reggie but it shows every creative facet of his comedy and it’s worth every minute. Skip to 2:30.

This traveling trope called “The Umbilical Brothers” is my new favorite thing to watch on youtube. They are the kind of art performance i’d like to see in person. These guys are not “one trick ponies” but they incorporate mine, sound and music, and theatricality to create a unique comedic experience. Multi-talented artists i think are emerging as the most innovative and original artists on the circuit these days. Combining vastly different arts to create a whole unique experience is what is overshadowing a lot of traditional artists these days. Another artist of the same vein which i will post at a later point is a comedian Reggie Watts who combines stream-of-conciseness, improv, intellect, theatre, and his amazing musical talents to create probably one of the most original acts i have ever seen.

In the first video ”The Umbilical Brothers” use just a green board to create amazing illusions. This video shows off more of their physical and visual act.

The second video in the link above highlights more their use of sound to create illusion and all around entertainment. I hope you enjoy both.

Umbrellas and the dilemma of art history

This is the 1922 piece “Parapluie-Revel” by Leonetto Cappiello who was a Italian designer in the first half of the twentieth century. I first saw this piece in a thrift store in Encinitas, California and i instantly fell in love with it. The bright fracture with the subject jumping out of the background caught my eye. There is something about the classiness of this vintage advertisement for a french umbrella company ”Revel” that was exactly my style. It remindes me of “Nighthawks” (below) by Edward Hopper, in terms of the flat palette and the sense of nostalgia one gets when viewing it. Both pieces are definitely “of the era”.

The context of Cappiello’s work is that it was an 1920’s advert for a umbrella company, probably not something you would find in a traditional art gallery at the time. Though the context of the piece is something for a purely capitalistic market and thus not thought of as art by it’s contemporaries, i can’t help thinking of the ad as art. I mean when does “pop art” start becoming art? It’s very difficult for me to put art within a hierarchy where what goes in a gallery is somehow better than what goes on a billboard. To me what an artwork’s original purpose was is quite trivial. all that matters is if the viewer is taken by the piece. A good art piece is one that can transcend beyond a single historical moment and still have meaning for the viewer. That is why “Parapluie Revel” sits on my wall as we speak.

The Christening of this here Blog!

I hereby declare this blog christened the USS Parapiuie! I also suggest this post be paired with a bottle of champagne like the merry people above. So firstly I should probably more thoroughly describe what this blog is about. As the description suggests this blog is where i vent about a potpourri of things that I enjoy or have interest in.

These include:

  • Music
  • Architecture
  • Art History
  • Cigars
  • Spirits
  • Coffee
  • Scandinavia
  • Fashion
  • And probably other topics, which i cannot recall at this point in time

I Know it seems quite egotistical to publicly show personal interests, but by doing this I hope to help myself understand these interests better or at least from a different perspective. Or just to be egotistical. Take which ever reason you wish, but all in all i hope the reader enjoys this blog.

Regards,

The USS Parapluie
